Small Batch Perfume: Why Less Is More in Luxury Fragrance

Walk into any department store and you’ll find hundreds of fragrances, each produced in quantities of hundreds of thousands of bottles. They’re formulated by committee, focus-grouped into inoffensiveness, and designed to appeal to the broadest possible audience. There’s nothing wrong with that — but it’s not for everyone.

Small batch perfumery takes the opposite approach. It prioritises quality over volume, character over consensus, and craftsmanship over mass appeal. Here’s why that matters.

What “Small Batch” Actually Means

There’s no official definition, but small batch generally refers to fragrances produced in limited quantities — typically hundreds or low thousands of bottles per production run, compared to the millions produced by major houses. This smaller scale allows for greater attention to detail at every stage, from ingredient sourcing to formulation to quality control.

At Lab D.83, each fragrance is the result of months of research and testing. We don’t rush a scent to market because we have a quarterly sales target to hit. A fragrance is ready when it’s ready — and not a day before.

The Quality Difference

Mass-produced fragrances often rely on cheaper synthetic molecules to keep costs down at scale. Small batch producers can afford to use higher concentrations of premium ingredients because they’re not trying to fill a million bottles at the lowest possible cost per unit.

The result is typically better longevity, more nuanced development on the skin, and a character that evolves rather than stays flat. When people say a fragrance “tells a story,” they’re usually describing this kind of depth — and it’s much easier to achieve at a small scale.

The Independence Factor

Small batch brands aren’t answering to shareholders or retail buyers. They can make creative decisions based on what they believe smells exceptional, rather than what a market research report says will sell. This freedom leads to more interesting, more distinctive fragrances.

It also means small batch brands can take risks. A fragrance called F*** Off would never make it past the first meeting at a major fragrance house. At Lab D.83, it’s one of our bestsellers — because we’re free to create for people who value personality over polish.

Is It Worth the Price?

Small batch fragrances typically cost more than high street options, but often less than you’d expect. The Lab D.83 collection is priced at £145 per 100ml bottle — comparable to mid-range designer fragrances but with the quality and character you’d expect from brands charging £200–£300+.

If you’re curious about small batch fragrance but not ready to commit, a discovery set is the smartest way to explore. Ours costs £30 and includes samples of every scent in the collection.
